Have you applied for either Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)? Do you want or need to? Talk about this. (see this site for more info: http://www.ssa.gov/disability/)

i applied for SSI in june 2008, and they approved my case this month (nov, 2008). it really wasn’t that difficult, just a fair amount of paperwork, and a visit to their doctor and psychologist. the main thing was the waiting: each time i needed to go into the office, i had to wait for two or three hours, even with an appointment.

had i applied sooner, before not having been able to work for 2 1/2 years, i would have gotten SSDI as well, which would have meant getting a good bit more money. and since they pay you based on the date you apply, it makes sense to apply as soon as you think it’s a possibility, since you can stop getting the payments any time you are able to go back to work.
